Volcano Alert Bulletin N-5- 2010 for Yasur volcano

Yasur Volcano Activity, Tanna Island: Observations and assessments on the Yasur volcano this week have indicated that Yasur’s volcanic activity has decreased after a brief period of high activity with significant explosions and ash falls at the end of May 2010.Explosions have become less frequent yet constant strombolian activity with occasional ejections of lava bombs still occur around the volcano. Therefore with these indications the Alert Level of Yasur volcano is now decreased to Level 2 on the Vanuatu Volcano Alert Level (VVAL). Visitors to the volcano are still advised to observe the volcano from safe distance away from the vent. It is advisable that visitors and tourist agencies must carefully consider this information given, to avoid the risks and dangers of the volcano. Mount Yasur not affecting travel to Tanna Island

Media statement, June 2, 2010: Tours to Tanna Island`s Mount Yasur volcano are operating as normal despite some increase of ash omissions last week. Hoteliers located near Mount Yasur on Tanna Island report that although the volcano was more active last week, ash levels have since subsided and tours to the viewing platform at the rim of the volcano are operating as normal. 'The volcano was omitting on May 27 and due to the wind direction visors were advised not to approach the rim. The activity subsided quickly and the volcano viewing platform at the rim is now open for visitors to view the volcano as normal,' said Mary Niavia, manager of Friendly Bungalows on Tanna Island. Mount Yasur`s activity level is closely monitored by seismologists on Tanna Island and activity levels are regularly sent to operators with advice on how close visitors can get to rim of the volcano. 'On the rare occasions when our guests are not able to walk right up to the rim, they still enjoy experiencing the amazing ash plane and other unique attractions including hot springs, underwater caves, waterfalls, traditional villages, fishing and snorkelig,' said Mary. Air Vanuatu which operates both domestic and international flights, and has recently received a new 68 seat ATR72 which flies to Tanna daily are closely monitoring the situation and are not anticipating any flight cancelations to the Tanna or surrounding destinations. Just 40 minutes flying time from Vanuatu`s caputal Port-Vila, Tanna Island is emerging as a popu destination for travellers looking for some easy adventure, authentic culture and amazing natural attraction.
